Chapter Thirteen

I made it back to my apartment around ten on Sunday morning. I wanted to head to the casino to stash my jewelry while I had some free time. I also needed to figure out what to do with Morgan.

I got off the elevator as Grandpa Bob came out of his apartment. I caught up with him as he turned to lock the door.

“Good morning,” I said.

“Hey, cookie,” Bob said. “What’s shakin’, bacon?”

“Nothing much, stay in touch,” I said, laughing. “Is Grandma in today? I need to get something from her.”

“She’s there,” he said with a note of discomfort.

“Have you and Grandma decided what to do with all the new furniture, the vases, and the pictures?”

“Not yet,” he said with a touch of regret. “Honestly, I don’t care so much about the stuff, but the kids flipped their wigs when I said I was going to give everything to a thrift store. I guess they’d all chipped in to buy the furniture, back when I first moved into my old place, and they didn’t want to see it tossed.”

“I can see that,” I said. “But I’m not sure if there’s enough room in your apartment for all the new pieces.”

“Yeah, I know,” he admitted, sounding like this had been a discussion topic for the last several days. “We’ll need to figure out what to do with everything. I don’t want to live with someone who’s always mad at me. I got a full ration of that in my last marriage.”

“Well, let me know how I can help,” I said. “Even if it’s only to cart some things down to the dumpster.”

When I walked into my place, Morgan was watching TV on the couch, looking like he’d just woken up. He’d made a pot of coffee, filling the apartment with its wonderful morning aroma.

I poured a mug and sat at my kitchen table. The news was on the TV at a low volume, and we spent a few minutes sipping coffee and watching the local headlines.

“Now that you’re in town, have you considered doing something with the figurines?” I asked, eyeing the duffle on the floor next to the couch. “I’m sure we could find somewhere safe to store everything while you figure out what you want to do with them.”

Morgan looked down at his bag. He sighed and shook his head slowly. “I’ve been dragging the Professor’s trinkets around for over a month, and they’re a pain in the ass. But I know how valuable they are, so I didn’t want to simply toss them.”

“I’m not suggesting you throw them away,” I said. “But my apartment isn’t exactly known for being a secure fortress. I’m going to store some things of mine in a safety deposit box at Casino Scottsdale later this morning. Maybe you could keep your things there as well.”

He let out a small groan of frustration. I could see this was a question that had been bugging him.

“You’re right,” he admitted. “I do need to get rid of everything.
