Chapter Thirteen
I made it back to my apartment around ten on Sunday morning. I wanted to head to the casino to stash my jewelry while I had some free time. I also needed to figure out what to do with Morgan.
I got off the elevator as Grandpa Bob came out of his apartment. I caught up with him as he turned to lock the door.
âGood morning,â I said.
âHey, cookie,â Bob said. âWhatâs shakinâ, bacon?â
âNothing much, stay in touch,â I said, laughing. âIs Grandma in today? I need to get something from her.â
âSheâs there,â he said with a note of discomfort.
âHave you and Grandma decided what to do with all the new furniture, the vases, and the pictures?â
âNot yet,â he said with a touch of regret. âHonestly, I donât care so much about the stuff, but the kids flipped their wigs when I said I was going to give everything to a thrift store. I guess theyâd all chipped in to buy the furniture, back when I first moved into my old place, and they didnât want to see it tossed.â
âI can see that,â I said. âBut Iâm not sure if thereâs enough room in your apartment for all the new pieces.â
âYeah, I know,â he admitted, sounding like this had been a discussion topic for the last several days. âWeâll need to figure out what to do with everything. I donât want to live with someone whoâs always mad at me. I got a full ration of that in my last marriage.â
âWell, let me know how I can help,â I said. âEven if itâs only to cart some things down to the dumpster.â
When I walked into my place, Morgan was watching TV on the couch, looking like heâd just woken up. Heâd made a pot of coffee, filling the apartment with its wonderful morning aroma.
I poured a mug and sat at my kitchen table. The news was on the TV at a low volume, and we spent a few minutes sipping coffee and watching the local headlines.
âNow that youâre in town, have you considered doing something with the figurines?â I asked, eyeing the duffle on the floor next to the couch. âIâm sure we could find somewhere safe to store everything while you figure out what you want to do with them.â
Morgan looked down at his bag. He sighed and shook his head slowly. âIâve been dragging the Professorâs trinkets around for over a month, and theyâre a pain in the ass. But I know how valuable they are, so I didnât want to simply toss them.â
âIâm not suggesting you throw them away,â I said. âBut my apartment isnât exactly known for being a secure fortress. Iâm going to store some things of mine in a safety deposit box at Casino Scottsdale later this morning. Maybe you could keep your things there as well.â
He let out a small groan of frustration. I could see this was a question that had been bugging him.
âYouâre right,â he admitted. âI do need to get rid of everything.
